Affectionately known as Uncle Laksiri, he was born in Sri Lanka and called Edmonton home for over 45 years. He and his wife, Rohini, have been faithful members of ZAMIE since 2008. Together, they served as leaders and hosts of the All Nations Cell Meeting, and Uncle Laksiri also assisted with the community dinners at our outreach ministry with NEAM.
In his professional life, Laksiri worked as a Professor at the University of Alberta and as a Research Scientist with Alberta Agriculture. Despite his academic accomplishments, he carried a simple and practical approach when teaching the Word of God at the All Nations Cell Meetings.
Uncle Laksiri had a generous heart and a deep compassion for those in need, from new immigrants to families facing difficult times. Many of us were treated to scrumptious meals at the Goonewardenes along with live comedy shows featuring Uncle Laksiri.
Though our hearts are grieving, we hold on to the blessed hope that we will see our beloved Uncle Laksiri again on the shores of glory. May the peace of the Holy Spirit be with us all, especially with the Goonewardene family – Aunty Rohini, Roshanth, Rajiv, Esther, and their families.
Please join us on Saturday, June 6, 2026 to remember and celebrate his life.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 1 Peter 1:3-4
