Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Lately I find myself reminiscing about the end of my race here on earth. My constant prayer has been, “Lord, grant me the grace to finish well.” As believers, we often begin our walk with God filled with passion and zeal, but as time passes, many sadly lose that fire. Why does this happen so frequently?
The truth is, the Christian journey is not always easy. There are seasons of hardship where circumstances spiral beyond our control, and in those moments, our hearts can slowly grow weary. And instead of fixing our eyes on God, we become consumed by our struggles, allowing discouragement to settle in.
On the other hand, some fail to finish well not in seasons of difficulty, but in times of abundance. When we reach mountaintop moments — when doors open, blessings overflow, and success follows — it is easy to forget the One who brought us there. Slowly, our focus shifts from God to the gifts He has given us.
In both seasons—whether trials or triumphs—our prayer should echo that of the Psalmist:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139: 23-24)
Therefore, may we keep our eyes steadfast on the One who alone can preserve us until the end. Then, just as Paul did, we will be able to proclaim: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4: 7-8
Lord, please give me the grace to complete this journey well. Do not let my focus drift away from You whether in the valley or on the mountaintop.
