Higher Ways

~Darene Cole

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

When I reflect on the greatness of our God, one thing that amazes me is how humans try to mimic nature to solve problems—this is called biomimicry. For example, airplanes were designed by imitating how birds fly. This practice has shaped advancements in architecture, medicine, engineering, and numerous other fields. But even these human inventions are just a glimpse of the perfect design that God has already created in the natural world.

Our God is far beyond anything we can comprehend—more creative, more powerful, and greater than we could ever imagine. Think about the highest mountains—God is higher and more majestic still. Consider the vast deserts and endless seas—God’s greatness is far beyond their reach. Our minds were never meant to fully grasp the fullness of our Creator or the vastness of his universe.

I believe God often chooses not to work in predictable patterns. This is partly because He is infinitely creative, but also because He wants us to rely on Him daily. If God had given us a simple formula for healing or breakthrough, we would simply follow the steps without truly seeking Him—turning faith into a ritual instead of a relationship.

1 Kings 19:11-13 “Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”

God sometimes reveals Himself through dreams and prophetic words, but He can also speak through a still, small voice like He did with Elijah. While God may communicate in ways familiar to us, He is free to surprise us with new ways of leading and moving in our lives. My prayer is that our hearts always remain sensitive to the leadings of the Holy Spirit.

Lord, open my heart to Your perfect ways and remind me that your ways are higher than my ways. Help me trust Your wisdom beyond my understanding and follow Your gentle guidance each day. Teach me to seek You above all, embracing Your presence in every moment.
