Divine Intervention: Fumes to Steam

~Maya Daniel

“The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still”- Exodus 14:14

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you knew you could not come out successful if the Lord did not intervene? Some call this divine intervention. In the Bible, there are many examples of God intervening grandly to save His people. For example, the parting of the Red Sea allowed the Israelites to escape the pursuing army of Pharaoh (Exodus 14:19-31,) and the 4th man in the fire kept the three Hebrew boys from sure death after King Nebuchadnezzar’s order (Daniel 3:25).

You might be thinking, “Well the Lord hasn’t parted any Red Seas for me lately”. Be encouraged today; I believe the Lord is calling us to open our eyes to see His powerful hand at work in our everyday lives. The Lord is still working, and He is “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:10).

Last week, I was preparing to teach a class and kept getting interrupted by small and large matters that immediately needed my attention. Suddenly, I found myself out of time to finish my prep work, and I was not nearly as ready as I wanted to be. I cried out to the Lord for help (Psalm 77: 1). I said “Lord, I need you to come in and take over this class”. Right away, the Lord gave me some ideas that I knew could only have come from Him, and they resulted in one of the best classes I have had this semester! A few days later, I spoke with a friend who was recovering from a cold, she was tired, and she had so many things on her plate that required her attention. I was able to share how God intervened in my life when I cried out for help, and we were both encouraged in our faith as we talked about how impeccable God is at taking our fumes and turning them into steam.

Only in Christianity does the idea exist that someone is strongest in their lowest moments. Paul wrote to Corinth: “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). This week, if you feel as though you are running on fumes, cry out to the Lord and wait with faith and expectation to see His mighty hand intervene on your behalf. Hold on to the truth that “the Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:14).
