The Gift of Today

~Alex Wu

Hebrews 4:7 again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

Psalm 2:7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.

Hebrews 4:16  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

We view today as a day between yesterday and tomorrow. In God’s plan, “today” is not just time, but a gateway to His rest. This gate was opened through Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection so that we as believers can enter His rest and receive His gift of eternal life. As we are celebrating Christ’s death and resurrection, let us forever remember this amazing grace!

His gift of “today” also includes something truly for today. When God said to Christ: “today I have begotten you”, the perfect tense emphasizes the status of sonship instead of the process of begetting. Therefore, the greatest gift of “today” is the sonship. As He is not ashamed to call us brothers, we as God’s “many sons” are being brought to glory as well (Hebrews 2:10-11). It is the privilege of this sonship that makes us draw near to His throne with confidence and receive help in time of need, even today. The gift of sonship is far more than mere survival in our defense against enemy’s attacks. He will also lead us to possess the enemy’s territories and make us victors in spiritual offense (Psalm 2:8-9). Through the gift of “today”, let us embrace the coming season of victory while fighting in Lord’s army. Amen!
