Unshakable Zion

~Alex Wu

Psalm 125:1-2 Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, from this time forth and forevermore.

Hebrews 12:28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe

Are Mount Zion and God’s Temple truly unshakable? Are God’s people on His holy mountain truly protected by the Almighty? When Roman legions broke into Jerusalem’s city walls in 70 AD, many Jews clung to the Temple on Mount Zion hoping that God would save them at the last minute. Salvation did not come on that day. This type of event troubled many Jews and Christians alike for two thousand years whenever the enemy got the upper hand. As New Testament readers, we should have known more than Jews. Jesus prophesied the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem, and rebuilding of the Temple within Him after His death and resurrection. Every time an Old Testament writer spoke about Mount Zion, the Spirit of God made him prophesy for another Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22). This heavenly Zion is covered by God’s glory. It cannot be shaken even when heaven and earth pass away. When our eyes gaze upon this Zion, this kingdom, we cannot be moved just as the heavenly Mount Zion. Let us ask our Lord to give us eyes of faith, to see things that are beyond the earth’s boundary.

Speaking from my own experience, I found that this “faith” seemed abundant when there was no battle, but evaporated quickly whenever the situation became overwhelming. One day the Lord showed me what went wrong. True faith is not viewing things from a different perspective. This kind of psychological exercise may comfort one for a short while, but cannot produce a lasting victory over the enemy. True faith requires transformation within us. If we only believe that Jesus became the ultimate Temple after His resurrection, our connection with the unshakable Zion remains only in our mind.  But God’s plan is to build His Temple within us through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). If we look upon the heavenly Zion while we are standing on an unshaken Temple Mount in our hearts, the unshakable Zion becomes our reality and we become the ones who cannot be moved in all circumstances. By His grace, our ZAMIE church is undergoing such a transformation. Let us work with the Holy Spirit and become a Zion church that cannot be shaken. Amen!
