“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Daniel 3:17–18
One thing that stands out in this passage is the incredible boldness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were standing before the most powerful man of their time, someone who had the authority to take their lives, yet they did not waver in their faith. They stood firmly for what they believed, even when it could cost them their lives. What faith!
What is also so evident is their deep trust in God. They knew that He was able to deliver them, and they believed that He would. But then came the powerful words: “But even if He does not…” We often love to quote these words, but have we truly stopped to meditate on what they mean? How many of us are willing to follow the Lord even if He does not deliver us in the way we are hoping for?
The “even if” is where our faith is truly tested. It is easy to worship God when He answers our prayers the way we want. But what happens when He says no? What happens when the breakthrough does not come or the situation does not change? Will we still worship?
The “even if” reveals a faith that is not dependent on an outcome, but rooted in a relationship with God. It says, “Lord, I know You are able, but even if You choose not to answer the way I desire, I will still trust You and worship You.”
We see a beautiful example of this in 2 Samuel 12:20. David had fasted and prayed for his son’s life, but when the child died, David got up, went into the house of the Lord, and worshiped. David prayed for one outcome, but when the answer was different from what he hoped for, he still worshiped. Will we do the same?
Lord, establish my faith and make me steadfast in You, regardless of my circumstances or the outcome. Teach me to trust You even when You do not answer the way I hoped. Give me an “even if” faith, a faith that will still worship, still trust, and still follow You. Amen!
